{"id":287,"date":"2008-12-31T00:01:49","date_gmt":"2008-12-31T08:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lovecraftforest.com\/blog\/?p=287"},"modified":"2023-04-01T16:06:12","modified_gmt":"2023-04-01T16:06:12","slug":"zbrush-mechanical-part-4-rounded-holes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sculptedmesh.com\/?p=287","title":{"rendered":"Zbrush Mechanical Part 4, Rounded Holes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I needed a hexagonal part with a round hole in the middle. \u00a0 This would seem to be a challenge for ZBrush requiring an outside modeler. \u00a0 However, it is actually pretty easy in ZB if you know primitives and deformers.<\/p>\n<p>First, we can start with our old friend the cylinder primitive:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sculptedmesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/cyl1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-288\" title=\"cyl1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lovecraftforest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/cyl1-300x232.png\" alt=\"cyl1\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sculptedmesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/cyl1-300x232.png 300w, https:\/\/www.sculptedmesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/cyl1.png 565w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not very hexagonal yet, and too long, but we can fix that. \u00a0We tweak the number of sides to 6 and shorten the z-length in the &#8220;initialize&#8221; menu:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sculptedmesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/hex2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-289\" title=\"hex2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lovecraftforest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/hex2-300x122.png\" alt=\"hex2\" width=\"300\" height=\"122\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sculptedmesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/hex2-300x122.png 300w, https:\/\/www.sculptedmesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/hex2.png 943w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Better, but no hole . . . We can solve that by setting the &#8220;inner radius&#8221;:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sculptedmesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/hexhole3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-290\" title=\"hexhole3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lovecraftforest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/hexhole3-300x104.png\" alt=\"hexhole3\" width=\"300\" height=\"104\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sculptedmesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/hexhole3-300x104.png 300w, https:\/\/www.sculptedmesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/hexhole3.png 949w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nuts, close, but the inside whole isn&#8217;t round. \u00a0 I&#8217;ll need to fix that up before the boss sees it. \u00a0 I go ahead and make this a poly mesh and then group the inside polygons. \u00a0I also divide the polymesh a few times (well, 3 actually) with the &#8220;SMT&#8221; option off (so that it doesn&#8217;t round off my hexagonal prism). \u00a0Showing just the inside polygons (with display-double on for ease of viewing, I have:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sculptedmesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/holegroup4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-291\" title=\"holegroup4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lovecraftforest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/holegroup4-300x220.png\" alt=\"holegroup4\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sculptedmesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/holegroup4-300x220.png 300w, https:\/\/www.sculptedmesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/holegroup4.png 362w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now if there was a easy way to round those off, I&#8217;d be home free. \u00a0 Hey, what about that &#8220;deformations&#8221; subpallet?<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sculptedmesh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/defmenu.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-292\" title=\"defmenu\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lovecraftforest.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/defmenu-128x300.png\" alt=\"defmenu\" width=\"128\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ooo . . . I like that &#8220;RFlatten&#8221; thing . . .
